Oral Traditions

It is strongly believed that Nathaniel Vess is the son of Jonathan William Vess and Elizabeth Heron of Texas.

History

Nathaniel Vess was born 1794 in South Carolina. He married Clarinda BELLEW, daughter of John BELLEW and Clarinda GOSNELL. Nathaniel and Clarinda had 11 children: Andrew, George, Abraham, James, David, Elizabeth, Mary, Francis, Margaret, Hannah, and Sheldon.

I strongly believe Nathaniel VESS came from Glassy Mountain, Greenville, South Carolina, where the BELLEW and GOSNELL families settled during the early 1800’s. It was known as the Dark Corners.

In 1830, Nathaniel Vess is in Rutherford County, North Carolina with his father-in-law, John BELLEW.

In 1840 and 1850, Nathaniel and his family are in Buncombe County, North Carolina.

In 1860, Nathaniel and his family are in Haywood County, North Carolina. They likely moved to Haywood County, shortly after 1850, as majority of his children are shown to have gotten married in Haywood County.

In 1870, Nathaniel and his family are living in Seiver County, Tennessee.

Dec. 1879, Nathaniel Vess dies of consumption in Seiver County, Tennessee. According to the Mortality Schedule, it was reported that Nathaniel had been living in Seiver Co. TN since 1864 and that both Nathaniel’s parents were born in South Carolina.
